Hutcheson Memorial Forest Center welcomes our community to visit us through a scheduled public tour, volunteer experiences, or through school or organization programming. HMFC is open during daylight hours by pre-arranged visits only.

Public Tours

We welcome the public to visit the Hutcheson Memorial Forest on regularly schedule tours. These tours are led by Rutgers University faculty and researchers who volunteer their time. Depending on the expertise of the tour leader, the interest of the group, and what is flowering, flying, calling or crawling, various aspects of natural history, forest ecology, conservation issues and ecological relationships will be explored and discussed.

Tours typically are one to two hours in length. All tours leave from the main entrance of the woods located at 2150 Amwell Road (Route 514) about 3/4 mile east of East Millstone, New Jersey. The trail through the woods may be muddy in places except in dry weather, so persons should come prepared. There is no charge. If you have a school or community group that wishes to tour the forest, please reach out to the Conservation Land Manager, Samantha E. Gigliotti, well ahead of the proposed date to arrange for such a visit.

Volunteer Opportunities

At HMFC we love when the community wants to get involved. We offer several volunteer opportunities throughout the year to help us with invasive plant removal and planting of native vegetation. Participants are welcome to join us for as much time as they would like, however, we ask that all volunteers sign up ahead of time for planning purposes. Volunteer days are also not just work, but fun! Participants get the opportunity to learn about current research, methodologies, and land management issues from our trained ecologists.

School and Organization Tours

Would you like to host a field trip at HMFC or a private tour for your local organization? If so, find more information under the Tours and Events tab.
